Philip Graulty was born and raised in Los Angeles. He began playing guitar at age thirteen and was instantly hooked on the collaborative process. Since then, Philip has participated in dozens of projects including rock bands, chamber groups, and world music ensembles. As a soloist, Philip enjoys works ranging from the Pavans of Luys Milan to John Zorn's Book of Heads. He is one of few guitarists to have recorded and performed Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint.
Aside from performance, Philip is devoted to the education of music and interdisciplinary arts. With the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance, he administers residency programs and concert festivals with artists from around the world. During a recent trip to Java, a pinnacle moment arose when Philip led a group of high school students in a musical exchange, sharing songs from Indonesian and American traditions.
With these collective experiences in mind, Philip is piecing together his latest program, Metamorphosis -- an exercise in the sonic transformation of plucked strings.
